[Day 5 - FMR] Dirty Jobs

[Kannon]

"Good people, from all across the Imperium! Right, boys and girls?"

The cheer replied. It was clear that those people were mostly rookies on Arrakis, a fresh recruitment.

[Cuyler Gray]

"That's good. I imagine your all kept pretty busy." Cuyler said as she sipped her beer.

[Kannon]

"Not until the next day at least, storm and all! Just securing the equipment and we'll be fine. Heard some scaremongering about those storms, but they can't be that bad."

[Dorian Drake]

Dorian slowly nursed the spice-beer, not wanting to lean too heavily into the man's generosity. "A storm you say? I've heard they can be something fierce. Seems like something that could put a lot of equipment out of commission. I saw over at the Splintered Rock base, they were in bad shape for repairs, do you have problems keeping equipment repaired here?"

[Kannon]

"New equipment arrived from False Wall West a week ago, no issues there, mate! Maybe one thing broke and we fixed it right away." He laughed. "Those folks at the Splintered Rock, they just play games with the Harkonnen rather than get the job done. Dunno where they had their heads when they came up with the whole union thing. Here we just do what we're supposed to, and it all works out. There were some guys coming from that B'riccan dude who wanted to get us on board for that stupidity but they were just tossed off the cliff and it ended the matter."

[Dorian Drake]

There was a bitter taste in his mouth and it wasn't the poor quality of the beer. More Harkonnen stooges, simple-minded and eager to be used like a beast of burden. If not for the man's pitiable situation Dorian would have the urge to channel him to a duel. Instead, he kept nodding and smiling along with the man while he looked around for anyone that didn't seem so satisfied with the status quo, anyone who was less than jovial about the festivities.

Mention of the storm turned Cuyler's attention to the structure of the barracks and the number of occupants. She looked around as she quietly sipped form her mug.

[Kannon]

In an environment where dissatisfaction was lethal few displayed it overtly.

Cuyler was neither an architect nor a climatologist. This structure might or might not withstand the storm. Probably depends on the storm. But it certainly did not give off an aura of invulnerability.

Scanning the room, Dorian saw many miners enjoying the festivities, the break they would be afforded by the storm without a worry about the danger of it. He could understand such a mindset... if they had the experience or the wherewithal to know better, but they were oblivious.

Failed 2 successes vs 3 difficulty, unless opulent might reduce the difficulty, I can tell when someone isn't really indulging themselves, just putting on a show. Failing that, success at a cost?

Through small talk, Dorian located one grizzled man that appeared the odd man out not because he was jovial any less, but that his way of showing it was the most overdone. Underneath, he seemed very afraid. And he probably had his reasons, as there were eyes here he couldn't escape now that he'd earned the auditor's attention.

Taking note of the man who was putting on a show, Dorian engaged longer than the brief chit-chat he had been having with the other miners, "You seem to really know how to enjoy yourself."

Also noticing that he had more than a few eyes following him across the room and the fear in the man's eyes as Dorian didn't disengage, Dorian placed his hand on the man's arm as if to stroke it flirtatiously, but gripped just a little too firmly. "How about I treat you to something a little stronger than this water they try to call spice-beer, back at my place."

Seeing the man hesitate, Dorian didn't tighten his grip, but he made sure the man could tell he wouldn't be able to pull away from him and that he wouldn't take no for an answer.

The man gulped and wordlessly followed, abandoning resistance.

"Let's have another round! Shall we?" Cuyler abruptly suggested.

Spice workers were more than happy to offer Cuyler more drinks.

[Dorian Drake]

Putting a possessive arm around the man, Dorian leaned in to whisper not so quietly into the man's ear, "Wise decision." and led the man out of the miner's barracks and towards the Frigate. Hopefully that would give a certain impression of their interaction and spar the man complications with the Harkonnens later.

[Kannon]

The Sardaukar guarding the frigate gave him a stare. "Why do you drag this wretch onto secured premises?"

[Dorian Drake]

Now that they were at the port and away from prying eyes and ears, Dorian relaxed a bit with the miner. Addressing the Sardaukar he says, "I wanted to speak with this man without his fellow miners or any Harkonnen spies nosing in, they throw dissenters from the cliffs around here. This way, they'll just think I'm some offworlder slumming it up with a rough miner. I will keep an eye on him the entire time he's aboard, but you can assign a guard as well if you'd like, the security of the mission is paramount."

[Kannon]

"Use common room, there'll be a guard there." The guard said with a sneer, after he'd processed the intention.

[Dorian Drake]

Nodding his appreciation to the Sardaukar, Dorian guides the miner to the common room and shows him to a seat. "Sorry to whisk you away like that, but I felt like you might have something different to say from your coworkers, and as you overheard, I don't think that would play out too well for you. So, my name is Dorian, what is yours?"

[Kannon]

"It won't play out well for me either way now." The man slumped into the seat, looking at Dorian with accusation. "You can call me Shaddam for all I care now."

[Dorian Drake]

"Well, Shaddam, if you are very helpful, I can see if we can't improve your chances. You didn't seem as gung-ho as the other miners back there, maybe you have some more interesting stories to tell than them?"

[Kannon]

"Ask questions, Dorian. I don't feel like guessing your interests." There was a lot of dismayed resignation in the man's bitter words.

[Dorian Drake]

Dorian took a seat opposite the man, "To the point then. First, how long have you been on Arrakis? Second, have you been anywhere other than Chin Rock. And third, have you seen anything suspicious with the spice harvesting equipment, anything being relocated or going missing?"
